Sit-Stand Workstations

This article was originally emailed as our monthly eBulletin at 11:30 on 11/06/2014.

SIT-STAND DESKS

We have been selling sit-stand desks for nearly 20 years but worldwide interest in the concept is now gaining real mainstream momentum. Much of the public awareness is coming from “sitting is the new smoking” stories and other articles based (often only tentatively!) on recent research. As frequently happens, television news reports and articles in daily newspapers give only part of the story and there is also, inevitably, a lot of scaremongering and bandwagon-jumping. The idea of making frequent changes of posture is nothing new but questions and demands from employees makes rational decision making a challenge. The availability of so many products and sales arguments (some conflicting) further complicates matters. For a more informed approach, we have assembled links to a number of useful articles or you can attend one of my forthcoming Sit-Stand Workstations webinars.

AGEING WORKFORCE

Our seminar in Loughborough went well and all delegates who responded afterwards would recommend the event to colleagues. We still have free places available for the London and Bristol events. You can find the brochure and online booking facility by following the links.

IT’S WORK BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT

At the beginning of June, I attended an excellent conference in Westminster to launch this new publication. With speakers from the public and private sector, there were some outstanding insights into best practice methodologies to accommodate the changing demands of today’s workplace. You can download the document here.

HEALTH & WELLBEING @ WORK EXHIBITION

After a few years away, we shall be returning to this event as exhibitors in 2015. As the conference gets bigger and better, we appreciate how difficult it can be to get around the exhibition. Our stand will therefore be directly inside the main entrance!

ERGONOMICS ASSESSMENT, SPECIFICATION AND INSTALLATION

There has been a lot of interest in our recently launched EASI programme which encompasses all the assessment service variants we offer. In particular, we are talking to a small number of clients about the EASI Inclusive system which provides all services and products for one fixed charge. The Customer Service team will be pleased to discuss the programme further.

Ergonomics Live: How a Floor Walk Delivered Immediate Impact

The Challenge

A technical team operates in a highly controlled indoor environment, undertaking a combination of intensive screen work and physical tasks involving delicate materials.

Despite having adjustable desks, ergonomic seating, regular DSE assessments and manual handling training, management wanted an independent review to ensure that workstation setups and working habits had not drifted over time.

Our Approach

Osmond Ergonomics & Wellbeing delivered a half-day Ergonomics in Practice Floor Walk, combining:

  • A practical workshop on posture, fatigue and workstation setup
  • One-to-one workstation reviews carried out in the live working environment

Advice was tailored to the team’s specialist equipment, space limitations and physical demands.

The Impact

Out of 14 staff, approximately 50% of workstations were adjusted on the day.

These small but critical changes, including chair height, screen position, and input device placement, immediately reduced strain and improved comfort. The session also refreshed awareness of good working habits, helping prevent the slow return of poor posture that leads to musculoskeletal issues.

Client Feedback

“The session was perfectly pitched for the team. The preparation beforehand made it highly relevant, which is why the team were so engaged.”

Why This Matters

Even in well-managed workplaces, ergonomic drift is common. A simple floor walk delivers quick, measurable improvements that protect wellbeing, reduce injury risk, and boost productivity.

As many services move towards virtual delivery for speed and convenience, this case also highlights the enduring value of being physically present in the working environment. Observing people at work and providing live, individualised feedback allows for nuanced, practical adjustments that simply cannot be replicated remotely.

That’s what makes our floor walking service so valuable and impactful for both individuals and organisations.
